Everything you need to know about Mewing

Mewing’s fundamental tenet is that by paying attention to where your tongue is in your mouth, you may alter the contour of your jawline. Additionally, some claim it can treat diseases including sinusitis and sleep apnea.

The work of British orthodontist John Mew, who is now in his 90s, is where the concepts for mewing originated. Together with his son, fellow orthodontist Michael Mew, they advocate “orthotropic,” a type of orthodontics that concentrates on “jaw posture” and retrains the tongue’s position. The senior Mew’s dental licence was recently revoked by Britain’s General Dental Council.

Mewing itself isn’t very new, but the exercises appear to have been taken up on YouTube and other online communities. In fact, some orthodontists and other medical experts advise optimal tongue alignment as a technique to define the jaw, address speech difficulties, and maybe relieve pain from jaw-related ailments.

The term “mewing” was not created by John and Michael Mew. It was inspired by a trend that began online among people who wished to alter the look of their jawlines using concepts from orthotropic, a technique that was initially primarily designed for young children whose jaws are still developing.

Does mewing work?

Learning how to move your tongue into a new resting position is the core skill of mewing. The technique’s proponents contend that your tongue position will gradually alter your overall facial features, most notably your jawline.

Mewing may also provide relief from snoring and jaw pain, according to some people. Mewing is said to operate by sharpening your jawline, which can assist contour your face and possibly make it appear thinner as well.

These exercises were not developed by Dr. Mew, despite the fact that he is credited with popularising the approach online. You can find recordings of people who have allegedly attempted the approach and received results by conducting a simple search on YouTube. (There are several videos that refute the trend as well.)

Mewing proponents also contend that the absence of mewing can negatively affect your jawline rather than exercising and changing your face. It might also offer children with tongue posture abnormalities, which have been linked in one research study to speech problems and irregular biting, remedial approaches.

On the other side, specialists worry that people who require surgery or orthodontic treatment might inadvertently try mewing to help correct any difficulties on their own.

Mewing before and after photos are not accurate.

Many before and after photos and YouTube videos can occasionally convince viewers that mewing is effective. It’s crucial to keep in mind nevertheless that these sources aren’t always trustworthy.

Instead of the necessary years, many of these online seminars typically comprise several weeks or months of practice mewing. Additionally, because of lighting and shadows, photographs might be misleading. The angle at which the subjects’ heads are posed in the photographs can also give the jaw an enhanced appearance.

To assess the effectiveness of mewing, more clinical study is required.

How to mew

The act of mewing involves pressing your tongue flat on the roof of your mouth. The movement is supposed to straighten your teeth over time and define your jawline.

You must relax your tongue and place it completely, including the back, against the roof of your mouth in order to meow properly.

Since you’re probably used to relaxing your tongue away from the roof of the mouth without giving it a second thought, this will probably take a lot of effort. Your muscles will eventually remember how to arrange your tongue in the proper mewing posture, making it automatic. It’s actually advised that you mew constantly, even when consuming beverages.

Mewing has a drawback in that it can take years to see benefits, just like with any do-it-yourself method that appears too wonderful to be true. You shouldn’t expect that you can rapidly fix any problems on your own by mewing here and there because maxillofacial malformations are normally repaired with surgery or orthodontics.

As a potential indicator of long-term memory, one study examined tongue resting positions to check if any muscle groups were active. Researchers discovered that none of the 33 study participants showed any indications of changed muscle activity in this instance.

Outlook

There isn’t enough proof to back up the mewing mania for shaping your jawline, despite the fact that it’s not intrinsically hazardous. Visit your doctor to explore treatment options if you experience any symptoms or aesthetic issues in the jaw area.

You can still attempt mewing, but expect little to no success. There is no assurance that mewing will function as an orthodontic treatment until it is thoroughly explored.
