What you should know
about Muscle Aches and Pains

Myalgia, typically known as muscle soreness is a very common condition. Almost everyone has felt muscle pain at some point in their lives.

Because muscle tissue may be found in nearly every portion of the body, this type of discomfort can be felt almost anywhere. Muscle aches and pains have no single cause.

While overuse or injury are major causes of persistent discomfort, there are other possibilities.

What causes the majority of muscular aches?

Muscle soreness sufferers may frequently pinpoint the source of their discomfort. This is because the majority of cases of myalgia are caused by excessive stress, tension, or physical exertion. Among the most common causes are:

  • Muscular tightness in one or more body parts
  • During physical exertion, overusing the muscle
  • Muscular injury while doing physically strenuous labour or exercising
  • Missing warm-ups and cooling down

Muscle pain can be caused by a variety of medical disorders

Muscle aches are not always caused by stress, tension, or physical exercise. The following are some medical explanations for myalgia:

  • Fibromyalgia, particularly if the aches and pains persist for more than three months.
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Myofascial pain syndrome is characterised by inflammation of the fascia of the muscles.
  • Illnesses such as the flu, polio, or bacterial infections
  • Lupus, dermatomyositis, and polymyositis are examples of autoimmune diseases.
  • Use of specific pharmaceuticals or medications such as statins, ACE inhibitors, or cocaine
  • Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism are two thyroid disorders.
  • Potassium deficiency (low potassium)

Muscle pain relief at home

Muscle aches are frequently treated at home. You can take the following steps to reduce muscle pain caused by injury or overuse:

  • Resting the portion of your body that is causing you pain
  • Ibuprofen or another over-the-counter pain medication
  • Use an ice pack to ease pain and reduce inflammation in the afflicted area

After a strain or sprain, apply ice for 1 to 3 days and then heat for any discomfort that persists after that.

Other measures that may help relieve muscle discomfort include:

  • Stretching the muscles gently
  • Avoiding high-impact activities until muscular pain has subsided
  • Avoiding weight lifting till the muscle soreness has gone away
  • Allowing yourself to rest
  • To release tension by engaging in stress-relieving hobbies and exercises such as yoga and meditation

When should you go to the doctor if you have muscle aches?

Muscle aches aren’t always harmless, and home treatment may not be enough to address the underlying problem in some cases. Myalgia can also indicate that something is amiss with your body.

You should consult your doctor about the following:

  • Pain that persists after several days of home treatment
  • Significant muscle discomfort that develops for no apparent reason
  • Muscle ache that is accompanied by a rash
  • Musculoskeletal discomfort caused by a tick bite
  • Redness or swelling together with myalgia
  • Soreness that happens shortly after changing medications
  • Pain associated with a high temperature

The following symptoms may indicate a medical emergency. If you have any of the following symptoms in addition to painful muscles, get to the hospital as soon as possible:

  • A rapid reduction in urine volume or a sudden onset of water retention
  • Swallowing problems
  • Having a fever or vomiting
  • You’re having problems breathing
  • Stiffness in the area of your neck
  • Muscles that are weak
  • The inability to move the affected body part

Prevention

Take these steps to reduce your risk of acquiring muscle pain in the future if your muscle pain is caused by tension or physical activity:

  • Stretch your muscles before and after you do any physical exercise.
  • Warm-up and cool down for around 5 minutes before and after each exercise session.
  • Keep yourself hydrated, especially on active days.
  • Regular exercise will aid in the promotion of optimal muscular tone.
  • If you work at a desk or in a setting that puts you at risk for muscle strain or stress, get up and stretch on a frequent basis.

Outlook

Muscle aches and pains are common, especially if you workout often or are new to it.

If your muscles begin to pain, listen to your body and stop doing the exercise. To avoid muscular injuries, ease into new hobbies.

Something other than tension and physical exercise could be causing your aching muscles. In this scenario, the ideal person to advise you on how to fully resolve your muscle discomfort is your doctor. The primary condition will be treated first and foremost.

If your muscular soreness persists after a few days of home care and rest, you should contact a doctor.
