The treatments were given five times a week. Each session lasted 90 minutes. Patients inhaled 100% oxygen that was compressed to double the normal air pressure throughout the procedure. The therapy improves healing by increasing oxygen flow to bodily tissues.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the therapy, which is administered in a chamber, to treat 14 illnesses, including diabetic wounds, radiation damage from cancer treatments, major infections, severe burns, and carbon monoxide poisoning. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for fibromyalgia is still being tested and other “off-label” disorders even though it is not one of the conditions that the FDA has currently approved it for.

The other 24 study participants underwent the same hyperbaric oxygen therapy treatment after a two-month break, and they too reported similar symptom reduction and alterations in their brain scans. The Patients were also able to considerably cut back on or even stop using painkillers.

Actigraphy data from the HBOT group revealed a 16-min decrease in sleep start latency and an increase in total sleep time of about 30 minutes. These results provide credence to the idea that opioid dose decrease followed by HBOT administration can enhance both the quantity and quality of sleep.
