Did you know that this location, 65 Duckworth Lane, has been home to a dentist's office since the 1880s?
Our firm has a distinguished history, with documents dating back more than a century!
For instance, while Mr W.E. Baxter worked here in January 1911, an extraction cost sixpence and a filling cost two and sixpence. Dentists were not registered at that time since the Dentists Act was not passed into law until 1921.
The first dentist employed by the National Health Service, which had just been founded, was Mr Leslie Jackman in 1948. Our loyal patients, many of whom went to Mr Jackman's surgery, which was located downstairs in the front room, are still fond of him.
Meg Daniels, A & S Dental Surgeons Ltd current practice manager, started out as a trainee dental nurse for Mr Jackman in 1978. In addition to Meg, Gerald Bedford, the dental technician, helped Mr Jackman by making dentures in the basement.
When Mr Jackman decided to retire in 1982, he sold the office to Mr Martin Durgan, who renovated the facility and added contemporary dental procedures like crowns and bridges. Ali Azfar, fresh out of dentistry school, was hired by Mr Durgan to work for him at Duckworth Lane.
Since their first semester at Leeds Dental School in 1985, Ali Azfar and Nick Shore have been close friends. They agreed to collaborate as colleagues because they each thought the other was a skilled dentist!
Ali Azfar and Nick Shore acquired Mr Durgan’s complete practice in 1991, and A&S Dental Surgeons was established.
Like our forebears, we place a premium on offering long-term, high-quality dental care because we wanted to see the success of our practice throughout our careers as practitioners. Years later, we believe we are making good progress toward our goal.
